Make safety your New Year's resolution

(NC) Rather than cut back on sweets this year, why not make a resolution to make your home safer in 2014? According to Enbridge Gas Distribution, Ontarians can learn how to use natural gas safely in their homes in just six seconds. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Book an inspection: In winter months, Ontarians are indoors with windows closed and fuel-burning appliances running, which makes the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure higher. All fuel-burning equipment, including the furnace and gas fireplaces, should be inspected once a year by a licensed heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) contractor to ensure they're working properly.

• Check CO alarms: CO alarms are your second line of defense. Take the time to test your CO alarms once a month. Change your batteries in your CO alarms every year when you change your clocks.

• Clear the meter: Check your natural gas meter, regulator and appliance exhaust vents for snow and ice. If needed, use a broom or car brush to gently clear them. Use caution when shoveling or using a snow blower to prevent damage.

• Teach your kids: Make sure everyone in your home knows that a gas leak smells like rotten eggs. All family members should know to leave the area immediately and call the gas utility.

• Create a phone list: Post emergency numbers, including the doctor, fire and utilities, by every phone in your home and program these numbers in every cell phone in case of an emergency.

5 easy tips for healthy eating during the holidays

(NC)Is there really any way to eat healthy during the holidays?

Yes, no and maybe are all correct answers. The temptations are great and the cravings for salt, sugar and fat are easily gratified, but here are some simple ways to stay on track:

• Never arrive at a party hungry. Before heading to a holiday event, eat a light snack of raw veggies or fruit, such as a cluster of grapes. You'll feel satisfied and therefore not so prone to overeat once you arrive.

• Plan time to exercise throughout the season. It will help relieve stress and help prevent weight gain.

• If you're going to a potluck, bring your dish plus a simple bowl of grapes to hedge your bets. Grapes are always festive, decorative, easy-to-serve – and best of all, every colour of California grapes – green, red, and black – are available through January.

• At the buffet table, be selective. Choose only your favourite foods and be sure to include some fresh fruit or vegetables to help balance your plate.

• Listen to your body. Eat until you are satisfied, but not over full. (There is a difference.)

I Use Vine to Help Sell Your Home

I use the power of Vine to help sell your home.  Vine is a video sharing social media app created by Twitter that hosts brief, 6-second videos. Through the app, I can create and view short (6 seconds max) videos, complete with audio, that loop within the news feed, much like a Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn feed.

Sault Ste. Marie 101: Part 1

Sault Ste. Marie is one of the oldest settlements in North America. For at least 2,000 years, people have lived beside the rapids of the St. Marys River such as Jesuit Missionaries, explorers, voyageurs, artists, soldiers, and traders. The rapids provided an ideal environment for fish gathering and for centuries communities of Ojibwa lived close to the river, their livelihood based on whitefish.

Sault Ste. Marie (also know as "the Sault" or "the Soo") is a city located on the St. Marys River in Ontario, Canada. It is the third largest city in Northern Ontario, with a population of approximately 75,000; residents of the city are called Saultites.

With a mission established by French Jesuits in 1668, claiming of the area by Simon-François Daumont de Saint-Lusson, in the name of Louis XIV of France, and fur trading posts soon after, this was one of the oldest European settlements in Canada.

Sault Ste. Marie is bordered to the east by the Rankin and Garden River First Nation reserves and to the west by Prince Township. To the north, the city is bordered by Hayden, Goulais River, Searchmont, Batchawana Bay, and Pancake Bay. To the south, across the St. Marys River is the United States of America and the city of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Due to having the same name, these border towns are known locally as the twin cities; they are joined by the International Bridge, which connects Interstate 75 on the Michigan side and Huron Street on the Ontario side.

Traffic on the Great Lakes flows through the St Marys Rapids via the American Soo Locks, the world's busiest canal in terms of tonnage that passes through it, while smaller recreational boats use the Canadian Sault Ste. Marie Canal.

Facts About Hawks (and how it relates to Real Estate)

Hawks were named among the most intelligent birds.

KEEN SENSE OF CLIENTS NEEDS and TALENT IN FINDING THE RIGHT PROPERTY

Hawks are widely reputed to have visual acuity several times that of a normal human being. This is due to the many photoreceptors in theretina (up to 1,000,000 per square mm for Buteo, against 200,000 for humans), an exceptional number of nerves connecting these receptors to the brain, and an indented fovea, which magnifies the central portion of the visual field.

Hawks have always been known to have sharp vision and to be very able hunters. Within the hawk species, the female is actually larger than the male.

EVERYTHING IS PROFESSIONAL

To ensure a safer journey, a hawk tries to avoid any large bodies of water in the spring and fall by detouring around a lake or flying along a boarder.

The Red-Tailed Hawk is the most popular hawk in North America. Previous observations have indicted that while hawks can easily mold to any surrounding, the birds prefer a habitat that is open. Hawks usually like to habitat in places like deserts and fields, probably to make it easier to find prey. Since these birds can easily live anywhere without too much problem, they can be found in mountainous plains and tropical, moist areas. Hawks have even been found in places such as Central America, the West Indies, and even Jamaica.

The idea of flocking during migration has been closely analyzed, and there is a conclusion that it is a commutative tool used by birds and other animals to increase survival. It has become very clear to observers that a bird traveling in a flock has a greater chance of survival then if it made the journey alone.

STAGING DECOR AND FINDING THE PERFECT NEST

The male and the female will also create their nest before the mating season and will improve it together during the nesting season. The two birds usually make their nest prior to mating. Hawks tend to be monogamous because they usually stay with the same mating partner their whole lives.
