Top 13 Small Cities In Canada

Yes, there’s a city of the same name just across the river in Michigan. They are joined by an international bridge, and have a joint history that goes back to the 17th century. Because of the accord between the U.S. and Canada, they function almost as one city. Rapids on the St. Mary’s River impede navigation at this point. Great Lakes shipping traffic uses the busy Soo Locks, and small recreational boats transit a canal on the Canadian side.

How Can I Inexpensively Increase The Value Of My Home?

You would be amazed at how basic it can be to protect your home investment without spending a lot of money. Here are some basic tips for you to follow.
1. DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE
Your home will look more spacious by getting rid of unnecessary items. Knick-knacks, piles of paper and magazines, old furniture. If you can bring yourself to permanently get rid of these things, while you are trying to sell, put them in a storage unit.
2. DEEP CLEAN
Room by room, do a deep clean from floor to ceiling. Walls, baseboards, corners from top to bottom. Windows, window sills, door frames, doors, door handles. Furniture and drapes too. A house that is spotless shows better and sells for more.
3. PAINT
A coat of fresh paint goes a long way in making your home look updated.
4. LIGHT SWITCHES AND PLUGS
Replacing light switches and outlet covers to a modern "Decora" style switches give your home a more modern appeal and can give the impression that the electrical system is updated.
5. LIGHT BULBS
Be sure you have a bright home. It is worthwhile investing in bright, modern light bulbs so that your home looks fresh.
6. HEATING SYSTEM
If you heat with a forced air system, but sure that everything is in good working order and clean. Having a regular maintenance plan for your furnace is a good idea. Potential buyers will see the label and inspection dates. If you have electric heat, be sure your baseboards are modern and clean. If you have very old baseboard it can be worth updating them to modern, energy efficient baseboards.
7. CLEAN OUTSIDE
If your home is siding, be sure it is clean. Wash all the outside walls. With brick or wood, give it a good sweeping to get rid of any cob webs etc. Sweep and wash the driveway, walkways and deck. Go the extra mile - curb appeal does matter.
8. SEASONAL DECORATIONS OUTSIDE
If it is spring, summer or fall, be sure to have flowers outside. If you are not much of a gardener, purchase some potted plants. In the colder months you can have a couple of welcoming seasonal decorations to set the mood.
9. YARD
Be sure there is no clutter in the yard. Old lawn furniture and junk should be removed. Make sure the lawn is mowed and raked. The first thing a buyer will see is your front yard. They often will decide whether the house is worth buying at top dollar from the first impression they get.

Black Beans Vegetables with Coconut Rice

BLACK BEANS/VEGETABLES WITH COCONUT RICE (I used all organic ingredients – I don’t want those nasty pesticides to contaminate my family or I)
First start with the rice: 1 ½ cups organic basmati rice (I used white) 1 cup organic coconut milk (Tip – do not buy reduced fat – coconut fat is very good for you. Remove from tin and stir in bowl before measuring – it separates in the can) 2 cups of water 3 or 4 saffron threads 1 tsp turmeric Bring the water and coconut to a boil with the turmeric and saffron (if you choose to use). While this starts to boil, rinse the rice. Once liquid and spices are boiling add rice and cook over low heat until done. (after 15 minutes or so)
Bean Vegetable Mixture 2 tsps olive oil 2 minced garlic cloves 1 tsp minced fresh ginger 1 small red onion diced 1 small red or orange pepper diced 1 small yellow pepper diced 1 small tomato died 2 generous handfuls of baby spinach or baby kale (I used a mixture) 1 14 oz can black beans (rinsed) Remainder of coconut milk and ¼ cup vegetable stock (more if you need more liquid) 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp coriander 1 pod cardamom or 1 tsp 1 tsp garam masala 1 avocado diced ¼ cup cilantro Juice of one lime
While the rice is cooking, Heat olive oil in a medium size sauce pan. Add onion, garlic, ginger and stir. After a minute or two add peppers, then the tomato. Add spices, coconut milk and stock. Stir. Add black beans. Heat. Then add spinach and heat just until it starts to wilt.
Scoop rice into a small bowl then turn out onto your plate. Scoop the bean mixture on the rice, and top with cilantro, avocado and squeeze lime juice on top (about ½ the juice from ½ a lime. This should make about 4 nice sized servings.

2014 will be a good year to buy, Ontarians say

The New Year has brought a renewed sense of optimism for a majority of Ontarian investors who are planning to capitalize on favourable economic conditions during 2014.
Forget about the icy conditions sweeping across the province, the Ontario market is proving a very big hotspot for many opportunistic investors.
Two in three Ontarians are intending to buy a home in the next two years, thanks to ‘good’ economic conditions, according to a new survey by the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA). Many investors are also looking to cash in on these favourable market conditions, with six in ten planning to sell up by the end of 2015.
Consumers seem to be echoing a similar sentiment for the 2014 real estate market. Prospective buyers and sellers in particular are also more likely to believe the overall economy is strong, which may be why they’re considering buying or selling their home in the next two years,” says Sean Simpson, vice president, Ipsos Public Affairs.
While the current low interest rate and positive consumer sentiment is fuelling this short-term optimism in real estate, around 50 per cent of those surveyed say they believe the market will continue to strengthen within the next ten years.

SAULT STE. MARIE RECEIVES TOP HONOURS
AT THIS YEAR’S COMMUNITY CONSERVATION AWARDS

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Sault Ste. Marie has been recognized for its commitment to
energy-savings initiatives as a recipient of the 2013 Community Conservation Awards.
The awards celebrate the leadership and innovation that municipalities across the
province are demonstrating to support province-wide conservation goals. Sault Ste.
Marie is among three winners, including Burlington and South-West Oxford.

Now in its second year, the awards are a collaborative effort supported by the Ontario
Power Authority (OPA), the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the
Electricity Distributors Association (EDA). The winners received their awards at the
December 6, 2013 Local Authority Services Symposium, organized by AMO. Sault Ste.
Marie was recognized for the 50,000 to 150,000 population category.

The Community Conservation Awards promote a culture of conservation and encourage
Ontario’s municipalities to participate in conservation activities. Municipalities are
recognized for their efforts in the areas of: conservation leadership, innovation and
market transformation, corporate/internal and community engagement, and
conservation achievements/savings.

The Community Conservation Awards are open to all cities, towns and municipalities in
Ontario. Participating communities are required to provide a written submission that
outlines their conservation efforts and a recent case study that highlights their specific
conservation initiative.

“The City of Sault Ste. Marie has been working towards a culture of conservation for
over 5 years, and is proud to be the successful recipient of the Ontario Power
Authority’s Community Conservation Award,” said Steve Butland, Sault Ste. Marie Ward
Councillor. “Our partnership with the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre’s Community
Geomatics Centre on the Environmental Initiatives Map has expanded this mandate and
increased the awareness of our efforts to the community.”

The power of local spending during the holiday season

(NC) Preparing for the holiday season is often associated with gift lists, bargain hunting and potentially crowded or stressful shopping experiences searching for the perfect gift.
This year, try exploring your local businesses for unique items and make local purchases to help support neighbourhood businesses during a season that sees a lot of consumer dollars crossing the border or disappearing online with retailers around the world.
“Shopping off-the-beaten path in one of your neighbourhood stores can be a much calmer experience during the holiday shopping season,” said François Ramsay, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs for Yellow Pages Group, a digital media and marketing solutions company. “Additionally, every purchase you make at a local business has a direct impact on the surrounding neighbourhood and the local economy, strengthening it and helping create sustainability and growth in our communities.”
Among the positive impacts of local shopping are:
• Job Creation: Small businesses are the largest group of employers in the country
• Local Impact: Dollars spent within the neighbourhood directly benefit the local economy and tend to be re-invested within the community.
• Neighbourhood Prosperity: The presence and success of small businesses play key roles in giving communities their identities and also influence neighbourhood desirability and growth.
• Customer Service: Independent retailers often personalized service, making shopping a less stressful and more meaningful experience.
There are a number of events across Canada that encourage local shopping, including Shop The Neighbourhood. This initiative of Yellow Pages Group takes place on November 30, 2013, strategically sandwiched between the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping holidays with the goal of raising awareness and encouraging people to make local purchases in support of their neighbourhood businesses. This year's Shop The Neighbourhood event takes place in the GTA with consumers benefitting from exclusive Shop The Neighbourhood deals offered by local merchants specifically for event day.
Holiday sales typically make up a considerable amount of retailers' annual sales. So help support your favourite local store or service this holiday season by supplementing or completing your holiday gift list purchases locally.

The payoff of buying locally

(NC) It's a well-known fact that technology has changed the way consumers shop. The world is at their fingertips as they browse the Internet for their latest purchase. The planet has become one big outlet where people can buy practically anything from another continent as easily as going to their corner store.
“Through the ease of online purchases, people can forget that their choices directly influence our local neighbourhoods,” said François Ramsay, Senior Vice-President of Corporate Affairs for Yellow Pages Group, a company offering digital marketing solutions for small businesses in Canada. “Choosing to spend your hard-earned dollars in a local business directly benefits the local economy and helps small businesses thrive, leading to sustainable and dynamic communities.”
Consumer experience and satisfaction is another reason why people should think about buying locally. Small establishments often offer exceptional customer service thanks to personalized one-on-one attention. They often have unique and original product selections and are located close to homes and worksites. Relationships are built between customers, local business owners and staff, making shopping an enjoyable and memorable event. Since local business owners often reside in the same neighbourhood, they also prioritize community causes and invest personally in the area's welfare and future.
Finding local goods and services nearby is simple thanks to a variety of local search solutions such as the Yellow Pages mobile app.
Make a local purchase today and support Canadian small business owners. Put your neighbourhood first.
